“Might” hakkında genel bilgi “May” bölümünde verilmişti. Bundan dolayı “might” ile ilgili örneklere bir göz atalım:

1- Permission referring to the past (as the past of MAY)

(“May”in Past hali olarak geçmişte izin verme ya da isteme):

– Our teacher told us we might go out when the bell rang.

— Öğretmenimiz zil çaldığında dışarı çıkabileceğimizi söyledi.

2- Wishes referring to the past (Dilek bildirir):

– I hoped you might pass your class.

— Sınıfını geçmeni dilemiştim.

3- Doubt and weak possibility referring to the future

(Şüphe ya da zayıf ihtimal bildirir):

– You might miss the train because you are a little late.

(There is more doubt.)

– Biraz geciktiğin için treni kaçırabilirsin.

– I might come again.

— Yine gelebilirim ( ama belki de gelmeyebilirim.)

4- Purpose (Amaç bildirir):

– He attended an English course in order that he might learn English well.

— İngilizceyi iyice öğrenebilmek için İngilizce kurslarına devam etti.

5- More polite request for permission (very formal and uncommon)

(Çok kibar istek belirtme ya da izin isteme ya da verme):

– Might I read your newspaper?

– Gazetenizi okuyabilir miyim?

6- Expresses doubtful or unfulfilled past with might have + past participle

(Şüpheli ya da geçmişte gerçekleşmemiş eylemler):

– He didn’t come to school yesterday. He might have been ill.

(But I am not sure.)

— Dün okula gelmedi. Herhalde hastadır/hasta olmuş olabilir.

(Fakat emin değilim.)

– You might have hurt him, but you didn’t.

— Onu incitebilirdin/yaralayabilirdin.

– They might have come by bus.

— Otobüsle gelebilirlerdi.

Requests usually refer to the near future.

REMEMBER: “Might not” vs. “Could not”
“Might not” bir şeyin olup olmayacağını bilmezsen. “Could not” bir şeyin olması imkansız ise.

Örnekler:

  • Jack might not have the key. Maybe he does not have the key.
  • Jack could not have the key. It is impossible that he has the key.
