USE 1 Duration Before Something in the Past
          (Geçmişteki bir şeyden önceki süreç)

We use the Past Perfect Continuous to show that something started in the past and continued up until another time in the past. "For five minutes" and "for two weeks" are both durations which can be used with the Past Perfect Continuous. Notice that this is related to the Present Perfect Continuous; however, the duration does not continue until now.

EXAMPLES:

They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived.
(Tony varmadan önce bir saatten fazla bir süredir konuşmaktaydılar.)

She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business.
(Şirket batmadan önce üç yıldır orada çalışmaktaydı.)

James had been teaching at the University for more than a year before he left for Asia.
(James Asya'ya gitmek için ayrılmadan önce bir yıldan fazla bir süredir Üniversite'de eğitim veriyordu.)

Using the Past Perfect Continuous before another action in the past is a good way to show cause and effect.

(Bu tense ayrıca yaşanan bir eylem veya durumun sebebini belirtirken kullanılır.)

EXAMPLES:

Jason was tired because he had been jogging.
(Jason yorgundu, çünkü yürüyüş yapmıştı/yapmaktaydı.)

Sam gained weight because he had been overeating.
(Sam kilo aldı çünkü çok yiyordu/yemekteydi.)

Past Continuous vs. Past Perfect Continuous

If you do not include a duration such as "for five minutes," "for two weeks" or "since Friday," many English speakers choose to use the Past Continuous rather than the Past Perfect Continuous. Be careful because this can change the meaning of the sentence. Past Continuous emphasizes interrupted actions, whereas Past Perfect Continuous emphasizes a duration of time before something in the past. Study the examples below to understand the difference.

Examples:

·       He was tired because he was exercising so hard.
This sentence emphasizes that he was tired because he was exercising at that exact moment.     

O anda yorgundu o vakitte çalışma yapıyordu.

·       He was tired because he had been exercising so hard.
This sentence emphasizes that he was tired because he had been exercising over a period of time. It is possible that he was still exercising at that moment OR that he had just finished.

Yorgundu belli bir süre çalışıyordu. Çalışmaya o anda devam ediyor olmasıda mümkün , çalışmayı bitirmiş olmasıda mümkün.

Örnek Cümleler:

They cried sadly when they left the town. Because they had been living there since their childhood. Kasabadan ayrılırken acı acı ağladılar. Çünkü çocukluklarından beri orada oturmaktaydılar.

Bu cümlede Past Perfect de kullanılabilir ve aynı manayı verir.

When the man entered the room the people in the room blushed as they had been talking about him. Odaya girdiğinde odadaki insanlar onu çekiştirdiklerinden dolayı kızardılar.

• Yine geçmişte kalmak ve tamamen bitmiş durumda olmak kaydıyla adet, miktar ve kaç defa olduğu söylenmeksizin tekrarlı olarak yapılan işlerin anlatılmasında Past Perfect Continuous kullanılır. Bu kullanımda tamamen Present Perfect Continuous’un geçmişteki eşdeğer halidir. Adet, miktar ve defaat söylendiğinde Past Perfect kullanılır.

She was very tired. She had been wolking since she got up that morning. Çok yorgundu. Bu sabah kalktığından beri yürümekteydi.

Bu cümleden hiç oturmaksızın yürüdüğünün anlaşılmasının yanında arada sırada oturarak veya başka şeylerle meşgul olarak yürümeye ara verip tekrar yürüyüşe devam ettiği de anlaşılabilir.

When I saw him he was covered in oil. Because he hed been fixing cars since morning. Gördüğümde üstü başı yağ içindeydi. Çünkü sabahtan beri araba tamir etmekteydi.

• Yine aynen Present Perfect Continuous’ta olduğu gibi yapılan işin konuşma anında bitip bitmediğine önem vermeksizin bir sonucu izah etmede veya bazı emareleri, belirtileri ve işaretleri, kendilerin sebep olan olayları izah etmek için Past Perfect Continuous kullanılır.

I didn’t want to travel on that bus. Because the driver had been drinking. O otobüsle seyahat etmek istemedim. Çünkü şoför içkiliydi.

Bu cümlede özne şoförün içtiğini görmemiştir. Fakat şoförün halinden onun içkili olduğunu anlamıştır.

A: Why were you shaking when you came in last night? Dün gece içeri girdiğinde niçin titriyordun?

B : It had been raining out and I was very cold. Dışarısı yağışlıydı ve ben çok üşüyordum.

Şu iki cümleye dikkat edelim:

When I went out it had been snowing. Dışarı çıktığımda kar yağmıştı.
When I went out it was snowing. Dışarı çıktığımda kar yağıyordu.

Birinci cümlenin çevirisinden de anlaşılacağı üzere kar kesilmiştir. Fakat yerlerde kar vardır. İkinci cümlede ise kar hala yağmaktadır.
